How to convert megabytes to gigabytes
Using the binary (base-2) definition:
GB = MB ÷ 1024
Examples:
- 500 MB ÷ 1024 ≈ 0.488 GB
- 2048 MB ÷ 1024 = 2 GB
- 8192 MB ÷ 1024 = 8 GB
Binary vs decimal data units
Many operating systems and hardware vendors mix two conventions:
- Binary (this site): 1 KB = 1024 B, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB.
- Decimal (marketing): 1 GB often sold as 1,000,000,000 bytes.
That’s why a “500 GB” drive may show about 465 GB in your operating system. This converter follows the binary convention so MB, GB and TB stay consistent.
